Emma Ackerman is a clinical social work intern in her advanced year of study at the University of Maryland, Baltimore who aims to provide an affirming, non-judgmental, collaborative, and culturally conscious space for clients to heal and grow at their own pace. Emma is particularly interested in working with individuals and couples of all ages struggling with anxiety, OCD, and panic, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and those navigating disabilities and/or chronic illness/pain. Emma is passionate about the benefits of integrating mindfulness practices into treatment to increase understanding and bridge gaps in the connections between mind and body. Additionally, as a former animal rescue worker, she is interested in how animal-assisted therapy, owning pets, and other experiences with companion animals can aid clients navigating complex trauma, lower chronic stress/fatigue, and reduce feelings of isolation.
A 2024 graduate of American University (studying criminal justice and psychology), Emma has spent 4+ years studying the intersection of the criminal justice system and mental health. She emphasizes the importance of rehabilitation and wrap-around care, rather than punitive approaches to criminal justice. Previously, Emma has advocated for children and families as an intern in the Restorative Justice and ATTEND programs at the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia.
Emma is currently being supervised at HeartWerq by Morgan Summers-Slaughter.
